Gaddafi appears in Tripoli as soldiers, government officials abandon regime

Moammar Gaddafi appeared on state television early today to prove he had not fled the country. Soldiers and government officials are resigning in outrage over the civilian attacks, while control is seemingly seized in some areas by the opposition. In Tripoli, Gaddafi supporters have been reported riding in ambulances and shooting at people. At the Egyptian border, “people’s committees” are replacing government officials. Libya’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Dabbashi, accused Gaddafi of killing his own people and urged for action from the international community against the regime. He said he has to get out or will be kicked out, “It is the end of the game.” Some tribal and religious leaders are urging all Muslims to rise against him. Influential Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi told al-Jazeera, “I am issuing a fatwa now to kill Gaddafi. To any army soldier, to any man who can pull the trigger and kill this man to do so.”
