Anti-greed protestors accidentally Occupy wrong street
Oct 14, 2011 | Written By: William Rum N. Coaker

A viral video is being blamed for an erroneous anti-greed occupation in Ontario this week.

Activists pouring into the GTA to participate in this week’s “Occupy” protests mistakenly programmed their vehicles’ GPS systems with “Occupy Wall Street” instead of “Occupy Bay Street”. Their GPS systems directed several hundred of them to the nearest Canadian Wall Street, which happens to be located in the small town of Brampton.

Activists expressed their anger toward Canadian Tire and other GPS manufacturers for failing to pick up on the error in time.

“This is yet another example of the cold-hearted callousness of corporate greed,” said one protestor. “I pay good money for my GPS yet it can’t even guide me to the right anti-capitalism protest.”

Other activists denounced Google for failing to provide appropriate protest directions on Googlemaps, while some suggested the GPS inadequacies were part of a plot by corporate media to crush the protests.

When asked why they didn’t seek directions, protestors explained that the Occupy movement is opposed to leaders. Following directions would have established a hierarchical structure of control, so they had to ignore everybody else and rely on Googlemaps instead.

Some protestors, trying to make the best of the situation, decided to proceed with their occupation anyhow. It was difficult to fit all 400 wayward protestors into Brampton’s Wall Street, which is a small side-road nestled in between Heslop Circle and Father Tobin Road.

Locals said it was the most people they’d seen in years. Children were busy cultivating their entrepreneurial skills, and said their lemonade stands were seeing a booming business.

Meanwhile, other Occupy! protests are experiencing similar difficulties. Several professional protestors trying to fly in to Occupy St. John’s [Newfoundland] accidentally booked flights to Saint John [New Brunswick]. They weren’t sure at this stage whether the Occupy protest would go ahead or not.

“Well, it’s hard to say,” said one leaderless organizer. “I mean, to tell you the truth nobody really wants to Occupy Saint John New Brunswick, including its current occupants. Even the city council suggested they might be willing to just give us the town, if we would agree to stay overnight. They offered to pay our bail if we created a commotion and brought the media in – tourism promotion, and all.”

“I’d rather just continue on to St. John’s,” said another protestor. “But since we’re leaderless, we can’t give Air Canada a name to refund our tickets to. It might undermine the non-hierarchical nature of our movement.”

It’s about time that an error like this could lead to something so positive. People need to learn that corporate greed is just as prevelant in Brampton, Brantford, Carleton Place, or Elmira, Ontario. If my GPS told me to protest at Wasaga beach I’d be there.
