Rally in support of improved sidewalk snow clearing in St. John’s
Monday, December 12 @ 3:30pm
Harbourside Park, St. John’s
The Essential Transit Association is inviting members of the public to a rally to let St. John’s City Council know that we believe sidewalk snow clearing is an important issue.
Every year when old man winter comes knocking at our door we all brace ourselves for another long stressful season of pedestrians walking in the streets. This is an issue that affects us all. Pedestrians are forced to walk the streets mere inches from passing vehicles putting their lives at risk every day. Motorists also have to take extra care while driving around the city to avoid hitting pedestrians who have nowhere else to walk. For both groups the end result of an accident is the same, a family is left to deal with an emotional tragedy that never should have happened.
It is clear that city council has decided that pedestrians should be treated like second-class citizens in the winter months. Once the snow falls we have to choose between staying at home or risking becoming seriously injured in an accident while walking on the street.
We need to stand together and send a clear message to our Councillors that we do believe sidewalk snow clearing is an important issue. We need to let them know that we do not want to put ourselves and our loved ones at risk in order to leave our houses. We need to tell them that the current level of sidewalk snow clearing is inadequate and substandard.
On Monday, December 12th please join us at Harbourside Park to show your support and let the city know that we expect better!
