Meet Our Team

Hans Rollmann – Columns Editor / Reporter

Hans Rollmann was raised in St. John’s. His previous work experiences in radio-broadcasting, archaeology, labour union activism and more…pale by comparison with the glorious career he intends to one day pursue as starship captain. Nevertheless, these experiences – from Canada to Asia to Central America – have shown him that Newfoundland and Labrador is as good as it gets, and he’s determined to work to keep it that way. He’s currently completing a PhD where his main goal is to spend as little time in Babylon Toronto as possible, and as much at home in Newfoundland and Labrador. Hans does his best pretty-much-everything while in chocolate. I mean with chocolate. Well, both.
Gavin Simms – Editor / Reporter

Gavin Simms was born and raised in the blissful isolation of Hermitage, N.L. He’s a quiet and peculiar sort of bayman. After school he left the province for the University of New Brunswick, where he earned an English degree. He later sailed back, took a job as a reporter / photographer for Clarenville’s newspaper and had the time of his life telling stories. In the fall of 2009, scared of going soft in the centre, he decided it was best to get back to the city. He’s been making music with his band and selling words as a freelancer ever since. Gavin writes best with no windows.
Ryan Belbin – Arts Writer

Ryan Belbin is convinced that Newfoundland and Labrador is an unparalleled cultural gem, and the best muse an arts writer could find. Raised in Pasadena on the island’s west coast, he received his B.A. in English at Memorial University and calls St. John’s his home-away-from-home these days. Lofty plans of seeing the world (and possibly taking it over) aside, he’s content right now to breathe in as many paint strokes and musical notes from this province as he can lay his hands on, pour up a cup of tea, and make his own kind of art by putting reflections on paper.
Kieran Hanley – Web Support

Kieran Hanley graduated from Dalhousie University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in International Business. He’s lived in Sweden, Ottawa, and everything in between (if ‘everything’ includes Halifax and St. John’s). He runs his own small marketing and web-design company, and though he would never take credit for the conceptual design of The Independent (thank the folks at DC Design House for that) since April 2011 he has been the backbone of what you see online and what you don’t see behind the scenes. He does his best thinking when he’s walking around tossing a baseball up and down in his apartment…but he hates baseball.

This is fabulous! I hadn’t realized The Independent was back in on-line form. I only have access to dial-up (both here in the woods of the Ottawa Valley and back at my cabin on the Northeast Avalon) but have added your site to my Favourites and will be in touch again. Thank you for carrying on!
