“I will remember Ron’s strengths. His powerful way of making someone else feel accepted. His encouragement. His amazing ability to turn words into vivid mental pictures.”

New Democratic Party candidate Julie Mitchell lost the Burin-Placentia West seat to PC Clyde Jackman by 40 votes in the election, and now there will be a hearing to decide if there should be a recount. In an application to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, Mitchell claims some ballots weren’t scrutinized as they were counted. Her application also claims that in three cases, people who don’t live in the district voted there by special ballot. A hearing regarding the NDP application will be held in November. Source: CBC
For people who have stood at a monument or scanned a landscape — the Great Wall of China, for instance, or the U.S. Grand Canyon — and wondered how it looked 100 or more years ago, there is now an app for you…. and the app seems to have already landed in Newfoundland. One photo from 1938 shows a car being tugged across Newfoundland, Canada’s Placentia Gut by two small wooden boats, a method that was retired as soon as a bridge was built to provide a more efficient route. The app uses GPS to find content that has been added within a certain vicinity. Users can also browse content that has been uploaded at any location on the map. The results can be filtered by date, ranging from the 1840s (the time of the earliest photographs) leading up to the present day. Source: International Business Times
Shortly after midnight on Saturday, firefighters arrived at the scene on Orcan Drive in Placentia to find a house engulfed in flames. When they arrived, the owners of the home were already outside, along with their 32-year-old son. The son had alerted his parents to the fire and had been badly burned. He was taken to hospital in Placentia, then transferred to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. How the blaze began is still under investigation.
