Rick Hansen has started another cross-country fundraising tour. Hansen was in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday, to launch the 25th anniversary relay of his famous trip round the world. It was a quarter-century ago to the day that the wheelchair-bound athlete began his cross-Canada trek. Hansen crossed not only Canada but the world, in the mid-1980s, completing the equivalent of three marathons every day through 34 countries as he raised millions for people with disabilities. This time, taking his place will be 7,000 participants from across Canada who will walk, wheel or run in a nine-month, 12,000-kilometre relay retracing Hansen’s original route across Canada. It will touch 600 communities.
