Memorial University has indicated that today it will respond today to a report by the province’s privacy commissioner that accuses the university of breaching the privacy act. A complaint was filed last year by the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission about a research project that it had commissioned MUN to carry out; the project was to create a registry of health and employment records for former Baie Verte miners. WHSCC officials believe a privacy breach occurred at a hospital in central Newfoundland, whereby MUN inappropriately collected personal information. WHSCC also allege that Central Health had done all it could to remedy the breach, but Memorial refused to cooperate. Stay tuned for MUN’s response.
