Organizers of the Lawnya Vawnya festival of music and DIY culture have announced the lineup for the fourth annual event, which will run April 24-27 at various venues downtown St. John’s.
“This year’s headlining acts include Polaris Music Prize winners Fucked Up, and indie rockers By Divine Right,” reads a press release issued to media Wednesday morning. Other acts include Toronto indie-pop act Snowblink, hardcore punk act the Soupcans, former St. John’s band The Burning Hell, whose members Mathias Kom and Ariel Sharratt are co-founders of the Lawnya Vawnya festival, and Nick Ferrio & His Feelings.
Local acts Green & Gold, Gala, Monsterbator, Steve Maloney &The Wandering Kind and Peter Lannon are among the local acts on the bill, as is Banded Stilts, fronted by former St. John’s-via-Placentia Bay songwriter Steve Hayley, who now resides in Sackville, N.B.
“The festival borrows its name from an expression in the Newfoundland dictionary that means ‘to have a good time at a party with plenty to eat’, and is building a reputation for its creative programming which includes the hugely popular daytime music crawls and intimate shows throughout downtown St. John’s,” reads the news release.
“Other festival programming will include panel discussions for touring artists, as well as a record and small press fair. Extremely popular in the past has been the Lawnya Vawnya Phone-It-In, which is when festival alumni call in to perform over a bank of telephones throughout the festival weekend.”
The festival was handed over to a crew of new organizers this year but, says the release, “continues to be an entirely volunteer based labour of love dedicated to producing a festival that both artists and audiences will enjoy, and showcases exceptional creative works from outside the mainstream.”
