A forest fire started yesterday during the afternoon near Red Bridge Road, in Kelligrews, only a few hundred metres from the Conception Bay highway. Hundreds of people lined the highway to watch four firefighters and the water bomber fight the fire, as smoke drifted through Kelligrews and Manuels. It is estimated that 500 – 1,000 square meters burned; investigators are on the scene today to determine the fire’s cause. Source: CBC

A strange fire has been spotted just east of the Commonwealth Avenue exit on Pitts Memorial Drive. The small fire appeared to be just metres away from the eastbound lane. Police and emergency crews had the small blaze under control within minutes, however the tower of smoke could be seen throughout the city.

April 28th is the International Day Of Mourning. Started by the Canadian Labor Congress in 1984, it’s a day of remembrance for those who die of workplace-related injuries and illness. This afternoon, union representatives, politicians and individuals were on hand at the Confederation Building to lay wreaths in honor of the 32 Newfoundland & Labrador workers who died on the job or of work-related illness, of the 1,012 workers who died across Canada, and of the unnumbered workers who died around the world this year.
