A plan to open a sand quarry near Conception Bay South has some residents upset. Last night, they spoke out against the plan at a public hearing held in the Foxtrap neighbourbood. The proposed development was put in motion by City Sand and Gravel, who want to develop a pit on Foxtrap Road that falls on the St. John’s side of the municipal boundary. “You’re knocking on our back door to come in,” said Brad Strang, part of a citizens’ coalition that’s against the quarry. Strang feels the proposed quarry is simply too close to schools and houses, and says it’s planned for an area used for recreation. If built, the quarry will not fall within the Town of Conception Bay South’s property zone, and the town can do nothing to regulate it. The company wanting to open it said it would operate only six weeks a year and that there would be no blasting. Residents are pleading for the provincial government to step in. The government’s decision on it will come by March 22.
