A 22-year-old man has been charged with assault with a weapon and with aggravated assault after a stabbing incident at MUN on Wednesday. Qiang Tong, the accused, appeared in court briefly on Thursday and will appear again today, Friday, for a bail hearing. Police say the victim, also in his 20s, was stabbed in the chest and remains in hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. Ivan Muzychka, the university’s director of communications, said the incident is troubling for everyone on campus: “When something like this happens, I think it rattles people who work here, people who study here. Generally, people are saying they’re shocked and surprised. It’s not something we hear about happening on the Memorial campus.” Muzychka also said along with police, the university will be doing its own investigation of the incident.
