Police officer David Byrne, 54, has resigned from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, while facing charges for impaired driving. A spokesperson for the RNC confirmed Thursday that the chief of police has accepted the resignation. While off-duty on March 11, Byrne was stopped by fellow officers. A member of the public had called them after a car leaving McDonald’s on Topsail Road was reportedly involved in a minor collision. Byrne will be in court April 1 and is expected to face two drinking and driving related charges.
