Debate surrounding the Conservative government’s back-to-work legislation began yesterday morning and continued through the night until daybreak today, as Parliamentarians were still having their say as of 7:30 this morning. The NDP are attempting to buy Canada Post and the union time to negotiate and settle a deal themselves, to avoid being forced back into work, by giving lengthy speeches one after another and chewing up time in the House. The debate can run until all 103 NDP MPs have spoken, at which point they will vote on the bill’s second reading and move to committee of the whole, where MPs have even more time-delaying tactics at their disposal. In the end, the tactics are only effective in stalling for time, as the Conservative government is guaranteed to pass the bill with their majority.
