Federal budget’s impact on Newfoundland & Labrador

There were no surprises in the budget delivered yesterday, but some federal departments are facing cuts that will affect our province. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Marine Atlantic and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will be left with less federal money. ACOA will have to make do with $6-million less in the first year of the cuts and $15-million over the next few years. DFO funding will be cut by $9.1-million this year and $57-million over the next three years. Marine Atlantic will not see any cuts this year, but it’s projected that by 2014, it will be working with $5.4-million less than it expected to have.
