There will be a meeting this morning between the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union and our province’s minister of fisheries, Clyde Jackman. The FFAW is hoping Jackman may be able to do something for those who lost their jobs at the Ocean Choice International fish plant in Port Union. The plant will not open this fishing season due to the significant damage it sustained during Hurricane Igor last September. Union spokesman Greg Pretty says they are asking Jackman to do something extraordinary for these workers, as the extraordinary hurricane damage has displaced them from their jobs. Pretty thinks the best solution would be a retirement package for the older workers, making room for younger ones. He says now that insurance companies are involved, the union does not know what the future holds for the plant.
