After yesterday’s byelection in Corner Brook, Gary Kelly now holds the city councillor seat left vacant by Charlie Renouf’s passing. Kelly earned 987 votes at the polls, which ended up being 331 more than his closest competitor, June Alteen, with 656. Kelly says people on the street told him they wanted to see councillors with “common sense” who were working hard for residents. He says his campaign focused on attracting new business to Corner Brook and young people to the city. To reach younger voters, Kelly says he utilized social media, like Facebook and Twitter. Our guess is that he also had a Google alarm on his name, as he commented on our digest item on the election yesterday within just over an hour of it being posted, offering a link to more information on his campaign to those interested. Looks like it pays off to stay connected online as part of a modern campaign.
