After a week of controversy about the quality of psychiatric care local inmates are receiving, the minister of justice says he’s calling for a peer review of psychiatric services at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s. Felix Collins rejected a report by the citizens’ representative, Barry Fleming, which calls for improved services for prisoners with addictions and mental health issues. He claims Fleming was not qualified to make such recommendations. Collins’ position led to an outcry on many fronts. In the legislature yesterday, he told NDP leader Lorraine Michael that there will be a peer review.
