Kiewit Offshore Services, owner of the shipyard in Marystown, has dropped out of the competition to participate in the $35-billion overhaul of Canadian maritime infrastructure. Union officials were notified on Friday that the 30-year project was not in the cards for Marystown, but Kiewit has thus far not explained its rationale — they will reportedly be doing so later this week. The announcement was met with extreme disappointment for the town which has had difficulty energizing its ship-building industry in recent years.
