The replica of John Cabot’s vessel “The Matthew” – the ship that he used to sail across the Atlantic and stumble onto the Rock more than 500 years ago – is in disrepair and struggling to find the money. Last year the province provided $10,000 to fix up the ship which is based in Bonavista, but now it appears more money is needed. The Legacy Committee, the group that maintains the ship, says that more money is needed to monitor the equipment that lifts she ship into dry dock. An inspection of that lift, to ensure it is in proper working order, may cost upwards of $20,000.
