James “Whitey” Bulger was the former head of the violent Winter Hill Gang in Boston; his gang was largely of Irish descent and ran loan sharking, gambling and drug rackets in the Boston area – and was on the run from the FBI for years for his connection with 19 murders. Whitey was the inspiration for the character Jack Nicholson played in “The Departed”, a critically acclaimed Hollywood movie… and it turns out Whitey has some interesting connections to Newfoundland and Labrador. Apparently Whitey’s grandparents were from Harbour Grace who moved to Boston in 1892.
