A plane bound for St. John’s this morning had to head back to Halifax after smoke was detected in the cockpit. The Air Canada Jazz plane landed safely back at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Flight 8600 had departed from that airport for St. John’s at around 6:15 a.m. Ashley Barnes, airport authority spokeswoman, said about 15 minutes later, the pilot told the tower they were returning because there was smoke in the cockpit. Barnes said the plane, with 44 people on board, landed without incident. Company officials are expected to examine the aircraft.
