Meanwhile, the results of previous oil finds continue to push the province’s capital city in new directions – literally. The city is asking for provincial government approval to allow two massive areas of expansion: one piece of land is near Kenmount Road, while the other is in the Southlands Area. The city needs the government to rezone the land from ‘rural’ to ‘urban’ to allow for development. Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff says that “You try to develop from the inside out” but critics are already emerging claiming this is in fact developing on the outside – a classic case of urban sprawl.
