The City of St. John’s is about to drop some big bucks on new public buses. City council has approved a plan to borrow $15 million to outfit Metrobus with 30 new vehicles under a seven-year plan. Half the city’s buses are currently at least 25 years old and councillors feel the buses should be replaced for safety reasons. Beyond safety, they considered the green option of buying new hybrid-electric buses, but decided against them due to their cost of $300,000 more than standard buses.
