Because of a dispute with a group of seafood producers in the province, the union representing our fisheries industry – the Fish Food and Allied Workers Unions (FFAW) – says that it is necessary to open the province’s lobster fishery to out-of-province buyers. A lobster price hearing in April saw the province adopt a formula for the price of lobster at the union’s recommendation, however a number of companies within the Seafood Producers of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPONL) say the price is far too high and have made the decision to stop buying lobster altogether. At this point, The province has not gotten involved in the matter.
