Flares, which are now believed to have been set off from Bell Island itself, were seen at around 7pm last night. The coast guard, upon being notified, tasked the Bell Island ferry Beaumont Hamel with carrying out an initial search of the area. A coast guard ship, the Cape Roger, travelling from St. John’s eventually took over the search about three hours later. There was no confirmed emergency.
