Newfoundland Power speaks about underground explosion

Newfoundland Power is weighing in on the explosion in downtown St. John’s on Wednesday night that sent a manhole cover flying into the air. The company says that a switch on the underground power terminal failed, resulting in a build-up of pressure and subsequent arcing. Officials say that the manhole cover probably only lifted a couple of inches into the air, and it is their understanding that the device did not hit the undercarriage of the truck which was passing over it.
