Likelihood of NDP/Liberal merger shrinks

With two of the leading contenders for the leadership of the federal NDP party now saying that they do not support a Liberal / NDP merger at this time, the odds of the “unite-the-left” movement making headway anytime soon is now quite slim. “I’m firmly opposed to any talk of merger with the Liberals,” leadership hopeful Thomas Mulcair said on CTV’s Question Period this past Snday. Liberals win third Ontario mandate

The Liberal party, led by incumbent Premier Dalton McGuinty, have won their third consecutive government in Ontario. In the end the Liberals fell one seat short of forming a majority government, however the party is pleased with the result as just one month ago the party was polling below the Conservatives and expected to be defeated. The Liberals ended up with 53 seats, the PCs 37, and the NDP 17. Time will tell how the Liberals will govern in a minority situation – and how each of the opposition parties will play ball.

Cleary continues call for fishery inquiry; Ashfield already says no

New Democrat MP Ryan Cleary has continued his call for an inquiry into the province’s fishery, and has committed to using his available private member’s bill this Fall to ask the House of Commons to grant him one. “Our future is threatened,” Cleary told reporters. “It is threatened by a lack of vision. It is threatened by the absence of a rebuilding plan. It is threatened by apathy in all quarters.” Cleary says that the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ past mismanagement of the fishery leads him to believe that it cannot be trusted to properly manage it in the future under the status quo. He says the commission would investigate the effectiveness of the current management system and the state of fisheries science. It would also investigate fisheries enforcement and quotas.
