Following concerns from members of the Mi’kmaq community, the Stephenville Figure Skating Club says it will not outfit its young skaters in costumes depicting Indigenous people and members of other marginalized groups. But the club has not acknowledge any problems with images shared in its Facebook group.

‘Vicious attack’ in Stephenville

A 30-year-old man from Stephenville is in hospital after what police are describing as a vicious attack in his home yesterday. RCMP said they received a call at noon that the man showed up covered in blood at another house. He was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and held for observation. The man gave police enough information for them to arrest another 28-year-old man. He was held by the cops for a court appearance, happening today.

Local man threatens to kill police officers

RCMP officers in western Newfoundland arrested a man over the weekend after he allegedly threatened to kill several police members. Police say the 21-year-old man from Stephenville called a dispatch officer and indicated he was planning to kill members of the police force in the Bay St. George area. RCMP officers went to his home and took the man into custody without incident. While in custody, police say he continued to threaten their officers, along with threatening correctional officers and probation workers. The young man is due in court today, facing multiple counts of uttering threats, breaching various court orders and one count of resisting arrest.
