About The Independent
Will you stand with us?
Your support is essential to making journalism like this possible.
The Independent produces public-interest journalism in service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. We do not rely on advertising revenues and we don’t put our work behind paywalls. The Indy relies on grants, fundraising, and the donations of a growing body of supporters who fund our mission to provide voice and coverage to the people of this province and the issues that matter to them.
Our priority areas of reporting include grassroots activism, the environment, climate change, Indigenous rights, labour, gender equity, racial justice, the arts, press freedom and politics.
Who we’re looking for
The Indy is looking for an experienced journalist who can work remotely and independently from the St. John’s Metro region, where they will cover provincial politics, protests, and everything in between.
The reporter/editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and contributors to produce hard-hitting, enterprising and investigative journalism.
The successful applicant will be our only reporter/editor on the Avalon Peninsula, so this is an important role. We need a self-motivated journalist who can identify important stories, be (or become) well-connected in grassroots and justice-seeking communities, file access-to-information requests, gather interviews, photos and video, write compelling copy, and work with the Editor-in-Chief through a rigorous editing process to produce hard-hitting stories.
Since we don’t have a physical newsroom, this position requires reliable internet access, basic equipment (computer, phone, camera/recorder, etc.), and an ability to work independently and efficiently in a virtual newsroom setting.
At the moment, we can offer a living wage of $27/hour for 26 hours of work per week (totalling $36,500), with potential for contract renewal and increased or full-time employment. The contract includes 20 paid vacation days and 10 paid personal days per year + your birthday off.
The reporter/editor will:
- Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to identify and produce impactful journalism;
- File an average of one (1) story per week and four (4) stories per month;
- Build relationships with sources;
- Research and investigate (i.e. visit archives, file FOI requests, etc.) issues and topics important to Newfoundland and Labrador;
- Attend newsworthy events in St. John’s and elsewhere as required;
- Copy edit & fact check stories prior to publication;
- Photograph and film interviews and newsworthy events;
- Identify potential legal concerns in reporting;
- Lay out and publish stories;
- Assist with newsletter production when required;
- Be (or be willing to become) proficient in social media as a means of news distribution.
