The Independent had a strong year in 2022, breaking local news and reporting the stories that matter to you. As always, we achieve our goals thanks to the generosity of readers.
As legacy media outlets in this province starve, shrink, and get gobbled up by mainland media barons, our job—producing meaningful and accessible local journalism and content—becomes increasingly crucial, and difficult.
Which is why we need your help before the new year comes.
What we raise this month is an indicator of what we’ll be able to accomplish in the new year. We’ll be looking at our budget in January, and you can help us reach the $15,000 we need to maintain and grow our newsroom.

Will my contribution be considered a charitable donation for tax purposes?
No. We don’t have charitable status, so we can’t provide you a charitable tax receipt.
How can I contribute without going through the website?
You can send an e-transfer to [email protected]. Please also email us with your security question and answer. You can also mail a cheque to P.O. Box 22, Station C, St. John’s NL A1C 5H5.
Is your website secure?
All payments are processed through Stripe. Stripe is a PCI Service Provider Level 1 which is the highest grade of payment processing security. All credit card information is encrypted, sent directly to Stripe and is never sent to our website server. This means that we are PCI compliant and any breach of our website won’t result in stolen credit card information. Learn more here.
