CBC is reporting that two incidents this year during the Targa Race are causing towns on the Burin Peninsula to debate the value of the race in their community. While one accident saw a car fly off the road and into the ocean causing no injuries, another incident where a car veered from the road has left one 67-year old woman still in hospital recuperating. Mayor Charles Penwell of Fortune said the community wants to make sure it doesn’t happen to one of its residents again. “We really can’t see any way that [the organizers] can guarantee that this or a similar type accident would not happen again so as a result we’ve said we don’t want Targa back again, “said Penwell. Meanwhile the town council of Marystown will be discussing the race next week.
