If you’ve traveled on the Trans-Canada Highway on the Avalon Peninsula recently, you may have noticed some strange technology on the sides of the roads near the Salmonier Line. But don’t worry, it’s not extra-terrestrial and it’s there for your safety. The detector system, a series of pillars on both sides of the highway, uses sensor technology and flashing warning lights to alert drivers when a large animal is on the highway. The system is only part of a series of pilot projects aimed at reducing the dangers of travel in Newfoundland; similar sensor systems are to be installed in other parts of the province, and wildlife fencing will be tested too.
