An underground explosion on Water Street in St. John’s last night sent a manhole cover flying into the air, narrowly missing an SUV that was driving past. There were no injuries reported. Fire Department Captain Dale Foote says he had never seen anything like this, “one of the Light and Power generators underneath the street exploded… and there was a bit of smoke and everything came up around his vehicle. People all around the area heard the explosion. It really was almost like a bomb going off.”
