Another significant privacy breach has occurred in our province’s health care system — this time in central Newfoundland. It involved an employee who inappropriately accessed personal health information, according to Central Health CEO Karen McGrath. She said that disclosures to those affected are already underway and will be completed as soon as possible. The breach occurred over a two-and-a-half-year period and involved at least 80 different reports belonging to 19 different people. The employee in question has been fired and Central Health has hired a privacy manager and privacy analyst to improve privacy protection. McGrath says through new electronic auditing software, they are also enhancing their auditing process.
