The Scope has published a “Guide to Bill 29” that highlights some of the key particulars of the controversial legislation that was pushed through last June after a week-long filibuster in the House of Assembly.
If you’ve been hearing about Bill 29 and Access to Information Laws a lot since last summer, it’s because the legislation marked an important moment in the province’s history, albeit a dark one.
Among other things, Bill 29 prohibits journalists and the media from accessing certain information they previously had access to and would normally share with the public (i.e. through real “news”) once uncovered.
The media’s ability to access such information is an integral part of any healthy democracy. If you’ve noticed an increase of protests and marches downtown or at the Colonial Building or Confederation Building, many of them make reference to Bill 29.
