On the heels of news that the Federal government is considering privatizing aspects of its search and rescue operations, Newfoundland and Labrador officials are making it clear that they are uneasy with the idea. “Safety is the No. 1 priority,” said Premier Kathy Dunderdale statement. “The federal government needs to be very careful here and ensure that they consult with the people who may be impacted by any changes they might consider, before taking any action. Furthermore, any changes considered should be subject to a vigorous review involving input from both experts and those on the ground who have the local knowledge which is so important.” Earle McCurdy, the president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union and Liberal MHA Kelvin Parsons expressed their serious concerns publicly. The DND has not yet commented on the issue.
