Nalcor and Innu disagree on impact of hydro dams

The environmental review panel assessing the impact of the Churchill Falls project is being given conflicting opinions on what it would mean for caribou herds. Nalcor said the proposed dams at Muskrat Falls and Gull Island would not affect the caribou. Labrador Innu don’t agree. Larry Innis, an advisor to the Innu nation said, “If you ask an elder what will this project will mean to the Red Wine caribou, they will say without a doubt it will have major effects on them.”
It’s believed there are fewer than 100 Red Wine caribou left. Nalcor’s scientists and a wildlife biologist hold the view that the impact would be negligible.
