Newfoundland energy minister visits the oil sands

Newfoundland and Labrador Energy Minister Shawn Skinner said his first look at Alberta-style oil extraction left him feeling better educated on the bitumen extraction process: “It was very eye-opening for me and very instructional and informative,” he said. Skinner also took the opportunity to promote the idea of a national energy strategy that included the development a national energy grid. Newfoundland and Labrador has energy to spare, and making it available to the rest of Canada is a priority, according to Energy Minister Shawn Skinner. “We are a warehouse of energy. I mean, we have a lot of energy here. Our Atlantic neighbours have indicated they would like to tap into any surplus energy we have,” he said. Before any excess energy can be sent from Newfoundland, though, the province needs to be connected to the national energy grid.
