In an example of regional cooperation moving from a report to reality, eastern Newfoundland is actively implementing its Destination Management Organization (DMO). The purpose of the organization is to develop, market, and manage the entire region as a tourism destination. The strategy would see the provincial government marketing the province as a whole as a tourist destination, while the DMOs would take responsibility for marketing each region. There are five DMOs in the province — for Labrador, Eastern, Western and Central Newfoundland, and for St. John’s. The province’s tourism strategy called for the creation of DMOs in hopes of doubling tourism revenues by the year 2020.
