The province is going ahead with a controversial treatment centre in Paradise, despite objections from the community. The centre is being designed to treat young people with complex mental health problems. Last week a group of residents in the community attended a public meeting about the centre, where they voiced their displeasure with the plan to the point where they disrupted the meeting by not allowing the town’s Mayor and other officials to speak. The group were not willing to speak to the media about their concerns. “I believe in this particular instance, we committed to a public meeting. We did a public meeting and we provided the information and we’ll still commit to meeting with people if they have issues and concerns,” said Health Minister Susan Sullivan. Paradise was mentioned as a possible site to treat young people with mental health problems in the province’s budget in 2011 and 2010.
