Indy nominated twice for national Digital Publishing Awards
Staff and contributors named finalists for 2025 provincial election coverage, art exhibit on Newfoundland waters and queer and trans joy

For the second time in as many weeks, The Independent has been named a finalist in a national journalism awards program.
On Tuesday the National Media Awards Foundation announced the finalists for the 11th annual Digital Publishing Awards, which take place June 5 in Toronto.
The Independent is shortlisted in the Best Digital Editorial Package (Small Publication) category for our special coverage of the 2025 provincial election, which included contributions from former reporter Yumna Iftikhar, Editor-in-Chief Justin Brake, and contributors Drew Brown, Jenn Thornhill Verma, Rhea Rollmann and Leila Beaudoin.
Rollmann also earned a nomination in the Arts & Culture Storytelling category for her piece What the water holds, which explores artist Ignatius Baker’s exhibit ‘Belonging’, a tribute to queer and trans joy and the beauty of Newfoundland waters.
Will you stand with us?
Your support is essential to making journalism like this possible.
Last week Brake and Indy contributor Derek Montague were named finalists in the upcoming Canadian Association of Journalists Awards for their investigation and coverage of a Labrador doctor who continued practising while under investigation following complaints from at least 20 women.
The Independent’s work and industry recognition are the direct result of generous donations from Indy readers and supporters. Thank you to those who funded these award-nominated stories and all of the work we published in 2025.
