The Indy relies on grants, fundraising, and the donations of a growing body of supporters who fund our mission to provide voice and coverage to the people of this province and the issues that matter to them.

About the Job

The Publisher will develop and maintain the organizational infrastructure that supports The Independent’s award-winning journalism. They will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Board of Directors (both the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief are executive officers who report directly to the Board).

Key responsibilities for this position fall under four categories: strategy, not-for-profit administration, revenue generation and relationship-building.

Strategy: The Publisher is responsible for monitoring the progress of The Independent’s strategic plan and is the Board of Directors’ operational partner in the strategic planning process. 

Not-for-Profit Administration: The Publisher ensures that The Independent operates smoothly and transparently. The Publisher is responsible for The Independent’s bookkeeping, payroll, and financial reporting. They are the operational lead for human resources, supporting the Editor-in-Chief in personnel management. They are also responsible for not-for-profit compliance and risk management (including insurance). 

Revenue Generation: The Publisher leads The Independent’s revenue strategy. This includes but is not limited to digital marketing, grant-writing and developing funder relationships. The Publisher works in partnership with The Independent’s digital marketing partner to execute lead generation and reader revenue campaigns. 

Relationship-building: Alongside the Editor-in-Chief, the Publisher deepens The Independent’s relationships with readers through in-person and virtual events. The Publisher also builds relationships within the journalism industry across Canada, as well as with potential funders and supporters.

Essential Skills and Experience

Applicants must meet the following criteria for their application to be considered:

  • Not-for-profit leadership and/or administrative experience 
  • Experience with financial management (payroll, bookkeeping, etc)
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors
  • Supervisory/management experience
  • Proven ability to work independently

Additional Skills and Experience

The following assets further advantage applicants, but are not required for their application to be considered:

  • Digital marketing experience
  • Fundraising experience
  • Grant-writing experience
  • Human Resources experience
  • Experience in the field of journalism
  • Experience in the field of publishing 

All candidates must be:

  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Located in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Willing and able to travel within Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada to represent The Independent. The Publisher will travel to 2-3 conferences per year, and some travel will take place on weekends.

Compensation and Working Environment

  • Annual salary: $75,000
  • 20 paid vacation days
  • 10 paid sick/personal days 
  • Your birthday off
  • Flexible hours; 40 hours per week
  • Overtime compensated as paid time off in lieu
  • Fully remote, with the exception of conference travel and occasional in-person events 
  • Professional development budget
  • Budget for essential office supplies
